Country: Ethiopia
Host site: Jimma University, College of Engineering and Technology
Assignment title: Instructor, Biomedical Engineering
Length of assignment: 12 months
Ethiopia is putting forth extensive effort to expand and improve the quality of its healthcare services. As a result, increasing amounts of medical equipment is being deployed to the peripheries of the country to improve the diagnostic and treatment capabilities of primary healthcare units. The dissemination of major equipment, such as x-ray machines, ultrasound units, and laboratory auto-analyzers is reaching facilities below the referral hospital level, and the rate of such increase in equipment deployment is commendably accelerating. However, the capabilities to manage or maintain medical equipment remain extremely weak.
In view of this, Jimma University (JU) has started a training program in the field of biomedical engineering, which will help alleviate the challenge of biomedical equipment maintenance and thereby improve the quality of healthcare services in the country. Following are the general objectives:
-
Produce high-level technical manpower that can participate in national health-sector activities and clinical technology.
-
Produce engineers that can carry out maintenance and design of medical and hospital equipment at central and primary health care unit levels.
-
Prepare graduates to be able to orient medical staff in the proper utilization and preventive maintenance of biomedical equipment
-
Prepare graduates who undertake basic design and construction activity of biomedical equipment.
-
Create graduates capable of carrying out research in the areas of biomedical engineering relevant to the needs of the country.
In-country placement site:
Jimma University is a public higher education institution established in December 1999 by amalgamation of Jimma College of Agriculture (founded in 1952) and Jimma Institute of Health Sciences (established in 1983). Since its amalgamation, the university has grown into six colleges, two institutions, and a graduate school. Currently the university is running 46 undergraduate and 40 graduate programs, enrolls 32,000 students, and employs a combined workforce of 2,840 in the 2009-2010 academic year. Sensing the dire need for biomedical engineers in Ethiopia, the College of Engineering and Technology developed a curriculum in biomedical engineering and opened the department of Biomedical Engineering in September 2008, enrolling 34 students. The department is not only new, but also the first in Ethiopia, hence it faces difficulties operating the program and seeks support from other organizations.
At this time, JU has second-year students and, until the end of this semester, will not face too great a difficulty in handling courses and laboratories. However, starting with the coming semester, senior (third-year) students will start their core courses. Given the existing shortage of biomedical engineers in Ethiopia, JU needs professionals in the respective fields to conduct classes and laboratories.
Objective of volunteer assignment:
-
Conduct advanced courses and laboratories related to the volunteer’s profession
-
Help organize biomedical laboratories at JU
-
Advise the Head of the Department and College on matters related to training of biomedical engineers
-
Facilitate acquisition of laboratory equipments and teaching materials
-
Share their experiences to students as well as local staffs in research, laboratories, etc.
-
Train junior staff in Ethiopia within the campus
-
Create a conducive environment to twin the department with a sister university and/or organization within the country or abroad
-
Work on maintaining the quality of the biomedical engineering training program and improvement of the curriculum
If you are interested in serving as a volunteer, go to www.twinningagainstaids.org/volunteers.html and submit an application online.
This volunteer position is a part of the Volunteer Healthcare Corps (VHC). The VHC is an initiative of the AIHA HIV/AIDS Twinning Center designed to bring highly qualified professionals into supporting roles in Twinning Center partnerships and other projects funded by the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.
The program places qualified individuals at host sites that need the long-term (3-12 months), onsite presence a volunteer can provide. Most opportunities are for trained doctors and nurses, but allied health professionals such as social workers, health educators, lab technicians, pharmacists, and mental health workers are also needed.
The HIV/AIDS Twinning Center provides each volunteer with in-country support, airfare, housing, living allowances, medical evacuation insurance, and covers expenses for vaccinations and visa/work permits.
